Barack Obama in The Tonight Show With Jay Leno

Obama embarked on a similar public campaign, on the stump and in the media, last month when he was trying to build support for his economic stimulus plan. Obama might just be squeezing in an appearance before Leno leaves the show later this year -- but he said the show could play in his favor as he tries to sell his economic agenda.

The appearance will mark the first time a sitting American president has ever been a guest on a late night talk show. He'll tape his segment while in Southern California to promote his economic recovery plan.

Richard Nixon's performance on "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" in 1968 -- have used comedy shows for campaigning, Obama becomes the first sitting president to appear.

As Obama started a two-day Southern California tour Wednesday in Costa Mesa, the White House was ballyhooing projects backed by the stimulus - among them, an eastbound lane for the Riverside Freeway in Orange County. His mention of that work drew cheers from a crowd of 1,300 at his Costa Mesa town hall.

Schwarzenegger is set to join Obama at his second town hall today in Los Angeles. Obama will tape the show Thursday afternoon during a two-day swing through the Los Angeles area for town hall meetings focusing on the economy.
