Publicity about the data center and public tours has long since stopped. Physical access to most computer rooms is now heavily restricted, even to senior executives. Instead of doing batch processing, which only had to be completed by the following business morning, many data centers now perform work in real time. Ironically, while corporate reliance on data center technology has grown, the interest in it has subsided. Unplanned downtime used to be a nuisance. It now translates into financial losses, which can be measured in significant fractions of quarterly earnings.
