The national carrier Air India today slashed its basic fares on domestic sectors ranging from 35-82 per cent. In a move that will bring cheer to air-travellers and give fillip to air travel, Air India has effected a substantial reduction in its basic fares on domestic sector from today.

The fare reduction is across 20 domestic sectors with an average cut of 52 per cent, the benefit of reduced fares will be extended to other sectors soon. Following the fare cut by the national carrier, a Bangalore-Hyderabad ticket would be as cheap as Rs 200 (excluding taxes) against Rs 1,100 earlier, the spokesperson said.

With a 49 per cent reduction in fares on the busy Delhi- Mumbai sector, the basic ticket price has come down to Rs 1,675 as against Rs 3,300.

Shortly after Air India effected the fare-cut, Jet Airways, Jetlite, also slashed basic fares on economy class across all domestic sectors by up to 40 per cent with immediate effect. Another budget carrier SpiceJet has introduced spicy Hot Fares across its network, starting Rs 99 on an advance booking of 21 days or more prior to the date of travel.

The offer is valid up to June 30, 2009, a SpiceJet release said.

The fare war was triggered by Vijay Mallya-led Kingfisher Airlines which announced reduction in fares, without specifying the quantum, from January 1. The government-run carrier announced a fare cut a day after private sector Jet Airways dropped its economy class fares upto 40 per cent.
