BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile Successfully Launched

The Brahmos missile, named after India's Brahmaputra river and Russia's Moscow river, can travel at up to 2.8 times the speed of sound and has a range of 290 km (180 miles), according to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
BrahMos supersonic cruise missile with a strike-range of 290 km was on Thursday successfully test-fired in a vertical launch configuration for the first time by the Indian Navy.

India, which has the world's fourth-largest military, plans to fit the missile in several ships. Indian defence officials said the launch had been planned well before the Mumbai attacks, which India blames on Islamist militants operating in Pakistan. Indian Navy's second line of Talwar Class ships, under construction in Russia's Kaliningrad Shipyard, will also be equipped with new universal vertically launcher modules. Analysts estimate that India could purchase up to 1,000 BrahMos missiles for its armed forces in the next decade, and export 2,000 to other countries during the same period.
