TATA Nano to be manufactured at any cost

West Bengal will miss its date with the first Nano — the world’s cheapest car that was to roll out of the Tata Motors Singur plant this October-November.  Eighty-five per cent people of the state support the Nano project in Singur, while over 70 per cent feel that the issue has been over-politicised, according to a survey conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India.

The Tatas have decided to bring out the first Nanos from their Pantnagar or Pune factory. They have to do this because they will have to manufacture at least 1,500 cars every month from October so that they can keep their commitment of supplying adequate number of cars to showrooms and international exhibitions. As far as West Bengal is concerned, we are now trying to ensure that, at least, the company keeps Singur as the mother plant in future.

To minimize the impact this may have on the recently recruited and trained people from West Bengal, the company is exploring the possibility of absorbing them at its other plant locations. In view of the current situation, the company is evaluating alternate options for manufacturing the Nano car at other company facilities and a detailed plan to relocate the plant and machinery to an alternate site is under preparation.

The company said it would offer shares with lower voting rights and raise 42bn rupees to fund the purchase of Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford. Tata Motors said it would also sell assets worth 30bn rupees.
